Overview:
Sarona is a private equity firm, investing growth capital in companies and private equity funds in frontier and emerging markets. Through its strategy of partnering with local private equity firms, Sarona is able to help build companies that deliver excellent risk-adjusted returns while creating a positive social and environmental impact. Sarona and its predecessors have developed a wealth of experience and knowledge through 60 years of private investments in frontier and emerging markets. The company is based in Kitchener, Canada, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Sarona is a young company with a rich history. We trace our roots back to 1953 when a group of businesspeople formed a private investment company to invest in the Sarona Dairy in Paraguay, South America. The Sarona Dairy investment was different from other investments: it aimed to generate financial returns and stimulate the development of the struggling local economy. This combination of sound investment principles and social values paid off. The community flourished and the investment itself ultimately spawned an industry that served 70% of Paraguay’s dairy market. Over time, the original private investment company became an international development organisation called MEDA (Menonnite Economic Development Associates). In 2010, Sarona Asset Management was spun out of MEDA, through a management buy-out, to become a privately-owned, independent investment firm. Management and MEDA had a collective vision to build a scalable business. Today, Sarona is an institutional investment firm with management interests fully aligned to that of its investors and with MEDA retaining a 10% stake in the company. The objective however remains the same: to invest capital in profitable growth markets and stimulate sustainable development.
